Building Blocks

Mixing standard repertoire with contemporary music, this program illustrates the interconnectivity of music spanning hundreds of years. Puts’ thrilling solo sonata, Alternating Current, uses each of its movements to honor the style of some of the historical kingpins of piano writing: Bach, Beethoven, and Prokofiev. This program serves to explore those sonorities and textures to prepare the ear for the final work. Shapiro’s Spark serves as a prelude, and an jumping off point in the discussion of musical homage. Live commentary helps the audience connect familiar literature with contemporary sounds.
